Survey

Thursday, January 14, 2010

A public meeting was held January 13 regarding the survey that was in your mailboxes last week. We had a few people attend.

During this meeting we learned that Flatrock is up in population by 11.6% since 2006, but there is a low youth retention rate. We have a higher employment rate than the Province and Region(61.2%). We learned that the people in our town are well educated with only a 7.3% unemployment rate and because of this we learned we are a self-reliant town. Flatrock has a higher personal income per capita than the Province. So, overall, we learned that Flatrock is doing very well.

Some topics that were brought up were to set up a Welcome Package for when a new family move into Flatrock. There was big concern about our environment (protecting ponds as water shed areas, green space). Fire protection, animal control, recreation, the arena, school, our heritage, doing things for our youth and seniors(groups), and getting new volunteers were discussed as well.

There will be a newsletter going out later in January in your mailboxes.

There will be another public meeting on February 16 at 7:00pm at the Anglician Parish Hall in Pouch Cove.

We are still accepting survey's, so please feel free to drop them off at the Town Hall, or fax to 437-6311.

Please take time to share your thoughts on what you feel are important issues affecting the future of our community. Flatrock Council is currently in the process of developing a Community Sustainability Plan in partnership with the communities of Bauline and Pouch Cove. This is essentially a road map for our town's future, it will outline where we are now, and where we want to go as a community, in addition to as a region. Though the plan will not be "written in stone" it is a very important tool to create a clear focus and direction as well as outline steps required to achieve our collective goals. It is also required from Council to complete in order to obtain funding under certain Government Programs. This plan is very important to the future of our community and region. As an integral part of this process we must hear from the people of the community. If you have any comments on roads or snowclearing, social events, recreation or volunteering, it would be a good chance to voice them. Please answer the survey you will receive in your mail in the next few days and return it to Flatrock Town Hall via fax 437-6311, regular mail, drop off at town hall or in mail slot outside on green door. If you have any questions or comments about the survey contents, please do not hesitate to contact the Northeast Avalon Regional Economic Development Board {NEAREDB} at 753-5554.
